As Pogo once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."1 The work of our generation is, at long last, to begin the transition from a period of human devastation of the Earth to a period of human conservation of the Earth.
1Walt Kelly, creator of the highly regarded comic strip, Pogo, 1971.

Art with a nature theme

Contemporary Nature Art displays the work of various contemporary artists/naturalists. We limit our gallery to natural subjects: birds and other wildlife, insects, botanical images, landscapes and seascapes. We do not limit medium or artistic style, therefore you may see naturalistic works on paper or expressionist works on canvas.

Original serial art

Contemporary Nature Art, because it is part of The Good Tern Foundation which uses art as a tool teach a broad population, specializes in fine-art prints. Unlike reproductions, which are printed in large quantities by machine, the artist personally creates a fine-art print, one at a time. Each is, indeed, an original serial artwork.

To assure the quality of the prints and to maintain their value, editions of fine-art prints are frequently limited to fewer than fifty. The original plate - copper, stone, wood, linoleum block, or silkscreen - is retired or destroyed after the last print is made.

Before the printing press, printmaking was not considered an art form, but a medium of communication. It was not till the 18th century that art prints began to be considered originals and not till the 19th that artists began to produce limited editions and to sign and number their prints and record the technical information necessary to authenticate the work.

Because fine-art prints result in more than one copy their price tends to be less than a watercolor, oil painting, or drawing making them more accessible and affordable. On the other hand, because artist pulled prints are unique, time-consuming, and difficult to produce, they art more expensive than mass produced, open edition, prints or posters.
